STEEL RIBBONS FUND

Strengthening Families Facing Cancer

Steel Ribbons is a nonprofit organization supporting the educational, research, and financial needs of families facing gynecologic cancer.

As 501(c)3 organization, Steel Ribbons Fund’s mission is to:

  1. Provide emergency funds to families experiencing financial hardship during cancer treatment

  2. Provide education and support to families facing cancer

  3. Support research relevant to the needs of families facing financial hardship during cancer treatment

  4. Advance state and federal policies to support family caregivers

Founded by Gynecologic Oncology Nurses and Researchers

Steel Ribbons grew out of the work of the Gynecologic Oncology Family Caregiver Advocacy, Research, and Education (CARE) Center at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

Every day we see patients and families struggle with the financial hardship of gynecologic cancer and treatment. Exorbitant medical bills, medication co-pays, lost days at work, and costs of transportation all add up. We see families fall behind on rent, burn through savings, and face choices between food and needed medications. In November 2021, we started Steel Ribbons Fund to provide financial aid to families.

So far in 2023, Steel Ribbons Fund has provided $7,360 in funds to support 48 families with

  • Transportation costs

  • Medicine and insurance co-pays

  • Rent and utilities

  • Family housing during treatment

  • Food
